Learn From a Master Craftsman How Dolby Atmos is Redefining Recording Studios

There are many reasons why people set up a home music studio in Naples, FL. While you may not have access to all the gear a highly outfitted professional studio provides, you can still enjoy unlimited studio time while ensuring as many takes as you need to get it right. In addition, if you create a high-quality studio, you may also have the opportunity to rent it out to fellow musicians, providing a good ROI, return on your investment

Frangioni Media has been building state-of-the-art studios worldwide for over 30 years and remains at the cutting-edge of world-class audio studio design. Let’s look at why Dolby Atmos is now essential to a modern home studio.

What is Dolby Atmos?

For over 50 years, stereo sound has been the defining method of sound reproduction. It uses two or more independent audio channels and creates a 3-dimensional audible perspective as if the sound is coming from various directions.

Dolby Atmos is changing that long-held tradition, offering immersive audio technology that enables listeners to feel like the sound surrounds them and is over their head, localized far beyond stereo imaging. If you've visited a cinema in recent years, you've undoubtedly heard Dolby Atmos technology. You felt as if you were in the middle of the big crash scene or like you were flying in the plane. You don't just hear sound; you feel it.

Now Atmos technology is available to home studios. Dolby expanded on traditional 7.1 surround sound by adding overhead channels which allows creators to have over 100 virtually placed sound objects per mix.

What Can Dolby Atmos Do for Your Music?

Dolby Atmos Music moves sound in a 3D environment, creating tracks that make listeners feel as if they’re inside the music.

Let's say you have a mix of bass, drums, piano, and vocals. Whereas you used to have to turn the guitar down to hear more of the piano, you no longer have to do that with Atmos. There is enough space for all aspects of the music soundfield. When you use Dolby Atmos technology, you wrap the music around the listener as if they’re at the actual concert or the gig and, due to its dynamic format, it adapts to any device it's playing on.

What Equipment Do You Need to Create Dolby Atmos?

The Dolby Atmos Mastering Suite can be used to create immersive mixes. It includes Dolby’s Renderer Application and Production Suite software. All the processing is done directly in the software, letting you monitor Atmos panning effects using just headphones and a laptop. While it supports up to 22 speakers, you can use a recommended 7.1.4 monitoring system.

Of course, a home music studio requires much more than Dolby Atmos surround sound. If you’re in the beginning stages of your home audio studio design, you’ll also need to correctly choose the monitors, microphones, speakers, acoustic treatments, soundproofing, and much more.
