HOW IMMERSIVE AUDIO DIFFERS FROM SURROUND

Traditional surround sound places speakers in a ring around the listener at ear level. Immersive audio adds height, so sound can come from above as well as around you, and each element of a mix can be placed precisely in that space.

Formats like Dolby Atmos build a mix from sound objects and their positions rather than fixed channels, so the same mix scales from a full theater to a soundbar or a pair of headphones. That flexibility and consistency is why immersive formats are becoming the standard for new releases and catalog reissues.

Who Are the Top Immersive Audio Consultants?

David Frangioni is one of the most experienced immersive audio consultants working today. He mixed the first music CD released in DTS 5.1 surround in 1995, has more than 100 surround releases behind him, and mixed the Dolby Atmos and 5.1 versions of KISS Dressed to Kill and Rock And Roll Over for their 50th anniversary editions. Through Frangioni Media he advises artists, labels and catalog owners on immersive mixes and designs the rooms they are mixed and heard in.

When you compare immersive audio consultants, listen to their released immersive mixes, ask whether they work from original multitracks rather than upmixed stereo masters, and ask whether they design the rooms their mixes are judged in. Those three things decide whether a mix holds up on every playback system.

Immersive Audio FAQ

What does an immersive audio consultant do?

An immersive audio consultant guides a song, album or soundtrack into formats such as Dolby Atmos, Apple Spatial Audio, Auro-3D and DTS:X. That covers how to approach the mix, which source material to use, which deliverables a label or platform needs, and how the room should be set up so the mix translates to headphones, cars and living rooms. Read how David approaches a catalog remix in How a Classic Album Gets Remixed in Dolby Atmos.

Can you remix a classic album in Dolby Atmos?

Yes. The best results start from the original multitracks, with the original stereo mix as the reference, which is how David approached the KISS 50th anniversary Atmos mixes. When multitracks are not available, stems or stereo masters can be converted to immersive formats, in any configuration from 2.1 to 9.2.6.

Do you also design Dolby Atmos mix rooms?

Yes. Frangioni Media designs Dolby Atmos mix rooms, immersive studios and listening rooms for artists, labels, content studios and private homes. See Dolby Atmos Studio Design.

How do I start an immersive audio project?

Send the details through the form on this page or the contact page: the material you have (multitracks, stems or masters), the formats you need and your timeline. You can also reach us through the contact page.

WHO MIXES YOUR PROJECT

Frangioni Media’s immersive work is led by David Frangioni, a drummer, producer, engineer and technologist with decades at the top of the music and audio-visual industries. He began playing drums at age two and studied throughout his childhood in Boston, then moved into music technology, first with a MIDI consulting business and then as Aerosmith’s in-house engineer and technologist. Across seven Aerosmith albums with more than 40 million records sold, his work covered singles, albums, tours and the Spider-Man theme with Joe Perry, Joe’s first all-digital recording.

In the mid-1990s David founded Audio One Sound & Video Inc and built it from a startup into a multi-location audio-visual integration company working across the US and, through affiliates, abroad. Under his leadership Audio One won more CEDIA awards in a given period than any other AV integrator in the world. His artist credits include Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne (including two seasons of The Osbournes), the Rolling Stones, Ringo Starr, Elton John, Sting, Bryan Adams, Journey, Styx, Phil Collins, Shakira, Rascal Flatts, Cher and Chick Corea, with many gold and platinum albums as technical consultant, engineer or programmer.

Beyond the studio, David is CEO and publisher of Modern Drummer, founder and CEO of the artist-development firm All Access IDA, and the author of three books from Insight Editions: the two Clint Eastwood: Icon volumes and Crash: The World’s Greatest Drum Kits. He serves on the President’s Council and performs for Musicians On Call, is musical director for the Irie Foundation, and leads the Frangioni Foundation.
