Music Studio Construction: What You Need to Know

If you’re a musician or producer, why not use time at home to hunker down and record that EP or album? If you have the skills and some gear, the next step is having the right space with your own recording studio.

Your local Miami studio builder, Frangioni Media, shares the basics of building a home studio below. If you can’t take on music studio construction on your own, we have years of experience building studios for top-of-the-industry, world-class musicians.

  1. Choose Your Location Wisely

Depending on what you’ll be doing in the studio, you need to consider how loud you will get and the room’s soundproofing capabilities. As we have previously discussed, finished attics, garages, and new additions are ideal areas to isolate sound. Spare bedroom studios often cause sound to travel throughout the house. But with soundproofing treatments and specialized application techniques, we can minimize noise if a spare room is unavoidable.

  1. Room Within A Room

To successfully isolate sound, the ‘room within a room’ design is a complex but surefire way to soundproof. We’ll create a second wall within the room that’s thick and well insulated to contain your music. Special types of glue, non-toxic viscoelastic, transform sound into heat when layered inside drywall. With this method, you can blast music, scream, bang on drums, turn the bass up to eleven—and your neighbors won’t call the police. Of course, installing and applying these sound proofing materials is an art form of its own, which we have spent years perfecting.

  1. Optimal Acoustics for Recording

Not only is it essential to soundproof your studio, but you also need to consider the room’s acoustics. While soundproofing is concerned with keeping studio noise in and exterior sounds out , acoustics reduce echo and reverberations that can tamper with recordings. Untreated rooms have uneven frequency responses that interfere with playback. But absorption panels on the walls and ceiling can eliminate excessive decay. It is possible to absorb too much sound, which results in ‘dead’ silence. Diffusing structures can balance this, so the room sounds clear and crisp. The key is having a Frangioni-designed acoustic space. Natural, inspiring sounding playback.

  1. Find the Best Monitors & Headphones

To listen to your music and have a true understanding of the playback quality, you’ll also need high-end monitor speakers. You don’t want to hear your tracks on a friend’s speakers later on and be shocked by how different or poor the audio sounds. Monitors aren’t designed to enhance your music, so you’ll hear your mixing and mastering precisely as it is when combined with the right acoustic space (your studio). Models like the KRK Rokit RP7 G4 and Focal Shape 65 are popular among serious musicians. If you also use headphones, you’ll need to look for a pair with proper impedance, sensitivity, and drivers inside. Brands like Sennheiser, Neumann, Audio-Technica, Grado, and Sony are reputable for their studio headphones.

Audio booth construction in Miami

A vocal or audio booth succeeds or fails on isolation. In Miami that means a room within a room, decoupled from the structure, with sealed doors, quiet HVAC and humidity control, because traffic, concrete construction and sea air all reach the microphone. We design the booth together with the control room so sightlines, cabling and monitoring work from the first session.
